Many of my patients who visit me with the report of their ultrasound abdomen often ask me what is fatty liver? In some of their reports even grades of the fatty liver would have been mentioned.
They use to ask me, is fatty liver dangerous? Is it a cancer? Is it liver failure? Is it liver cirrhosis?

What is fatty liver?

Fatty liver means, unused energy in our body gets deposited in our liver as fat.
When people who eat more than what they actually need, body stores them as fat in your liver.

Is it a problem?

Yes. It is of course a problem. Fatty liver is not just about your liver disease. It is only a reflection of your poor diet habits and probable other metabolic diseases like diabetes, high uric acid, obesity, thyroid disease, hypertension.

What are the complications of fatty liver?

If fatty liver remain unaddressed it leads to stiffening of liver or fibrosis of liver, which end up as liver failure or liver cirrhosis. All patients with fatty liver should be evaluated for other diseases like diabetes, thyroid disease , uric acid levels and hypertension.

How can I prevent fatty liver?

Healthy eating habits and daily exercise is the real solution.

What is healthy eating habits?

·       Eat just enough for your appetite. Don’t over eat, especially don’t over eat rice and wheat.

·        Avoid alcohol completely, carbonated drinks like cocoa cola, sprite etc.

 

·        Reduce intake of non vegetarian diet and food rich in oil

·        Avoid fired and preserved items

What’s exercise plan ?

    • Burn out all your extra calories you eat daily.

    • So do a healthy exercise of atleast 30 minutes of open air brisk walking or jogging.

    • Do physical activities to burn out the calories you eat daily.

Is there medicine for fatty liver?

Yes there are few. But these medicines are effective only if life style changes are practiced.


How can You find out fatty liver?

meet your family physician and he will order some blood test and ultrasound of your abdomen to help you diagnose it
