Dr. Sanoop Kumar Sherin Sabu M.D.,

  • Neurologically impaired or mentally confused patients are particularly at risk of self-pulling the tube
  • Dislodgement is most common early (<7 days), when the tract is immature, increasing risk of peritonitis
  • Overall incidence of accidentally pulled PEG tube rates is 4% (pulled off within 7 days) to 12 %  (life time overall risk) based on different literature.

How does a PEG tubes inside look like?

There is a internal balloon in the gastric side of the PEG tube. The internal balloon measures:-

  • 5 to 20 mL of sterile water  (usually 15ml) if it is fully inflated. In some brands its as low as 5ml which is very low.
  • The   balloon   diameter when fully inflated is usually around 2 to 3 cm

After PEG tube insertion in done, in about 4 weeks time there will be a tract formation between the stomach wall and the skin a like a fistula.
