Clinical Interests

Special Interest in Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Dr. Sanoop Kumar Sherin Sabu has a special clinical and academic interest in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), with experience in managing complex IBD and a particular focus on advanced therapies, biologics, treat-to-target strategies, and multidisciplinary care. He has undergone dedicated training at the IBD School 2.0 , Ludhiana, organised by the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation India (CCF), with teaching from leading IBD experts including Dr. Ajit Sood and Dr. Vineet Ahuja. He continues to participate in academic discussions and closed-group case discussions with national and international IBD experts, including Dr. Ferdinando D’Amico of IRCCS Humanitas Research Hospital and Humanitas University, Italy, particularly on contemporary treat-to-target approaches in IBD.

He is actively involved as part of a multidisciplinary IBD team, managing patients with complex and treatment-resistant IBD, IBD requiring advanced combination therapies, and IBD with associated malignancy. He is trained and experienced in the use of biological therapies and advanced targeted treatments, with an emphasis on personalised treatment selection, objective disease assessment and long-term monitoring.

He also maintains structured, close follow-up of patients with IBD to optimise treatment response, monitor disease activity and improve long-term outcomes.

His academic involvement includes presentations and faculty participation at major IBD forums, including the AIG IBD Summit, Hyderabad; National IBD Conference of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation India; IBD School 2.0, Ludhiana; and TNISG academic programmes.

His clinical and research interests continue to focus on translating advances in IBD therapeutics into practical, patient-centred care. He reported the first documented case from India of disseminated extrapulmonary tuberculosis developing during vedolizumab therapy for Crohn’s disease, highlighting the importance of vigilance for opportunistic infections even with gut-selective biologic therapies. The case was subsequently published in the Journal of Gastrointestinal Infections (2026).

Dedicated Care in Liver Disease

His hepatology practice encompasses fatty liver disease, metabolic liver disease, advanced chronic liver disease and liver transplantation. He has been actively involved in the pre-transplant evaluation and management of patients undergoing Deceased Donor Liver Transplantation (DDLT) and Living Donor Liver Transplantation (LDLT), gaining experience in the multidisciplinary assessment of patients being considered for liver transplantation.

A major area of his academic and community interest is MASLD and early detection of fatty liver disease. He has initiated and participated in multiple free fatty liver screening camps and FibroScan-based community screening programmes, enabling large numbers of individuals to undergo assessment for liver steatosis and fibrosis. These initiatives combine clinical consultation with FibroScan, ultrasonography and metabolic risk assessment, with an emphasis on identifying liver disease at an early, potentially reversible stage.

His research in this field focuses on simple and accessible approaches to fatty liver screening. He developed and presented a novel zero-cost anthropometry-based formula using pant size to predict Controlled Attenuation Parameter (CAP), aimed at improving the accessibility of MASLD screening in resource-limited settings. This work has been presented at major national and international forums, including the AIG LIV Conclave, Hyderabad; TNISG programmes; and the APASL STC 2026, Singapore.

Advanced Endoscopy & Innovation

His procedural experience includes therapeutic endoscopy, Colonoscopy, Diagnostic EUS, ERCP, Endo-FLIP, EMR, polypectomy, luminal stenting, variceal banding, stricture dilatation, and advanced GI motility investigations. Experienced in performing and interpreting high-Solid State resolution esophageal and anorectal manometry, Capsule endoscopy and 24-hour impedance-pH monitoring.

He was involved in India’s first reported Endo-FLIP-guided redo-fundoplication and was the first in Tamil Nadu to demonstrate live Endo-FLIP application for POEM procedure at International Therapeutic Endoscopy conference in 2025.

He has also had exposure to advanced procedures including POEM, ESD, GERDx, endobariatric and advanced EUS interventions during his Super specialty Gastroenterology training under Dr. R Vinoth Kumar, an advanced Therapeutic Endoscopist and Gastroenterologist, at GEM Institute of Gastroenterology and Robotic Surgery, Chennai.
